In the heart of history’s past, with a story to unfold,
Lived Elizabeth Freeman, her tale is worth its weight in gold.
Born into a world of chains and strife, a life she didn’t choose,
But she’d rise above it all, breaking free of servitude’s abuse.
MumBet, they called her, a name full of respect,
A spirit strong and true, she’d never forget.
She heard the words of freedom, in the Constitution’s song,
“All men are born free and equal,” where she knew she did belong.
With courage in her heart, and a lawyer by her side,
She sued for her freedom, in courts she could confide.
A woman illiterate, yet wise beyond compare,
Her case against oppression, justice in the air.
Brom and Bett v. Ashley, a landmark to behold,
Their quest for liberty, a story to be told.
The court ruled in her favor, slavery’s grip unwound,
Elizabeth Freeman stood free, on justice’s hallowed ground.
No longer bound in chains, she chose to heal and care,
As a midwife, nurse, and mother, her love beyond compare.
She left a legacy of strength, in the face of dark despair,
A beacon of hope and freedom, for all to be aware.
In Stockbridge, Massachusetts, her story lives today,
A woman of great courage, who paved the way.
With dignity and grace, she changed her own decree,
Elizabeth Freeman, a symbol of what it means to be free.
